One of the best things about raising kids in DC is how many places there are to meet other parents. You do not need to be a joiner. Start with one weekly activity, show up a few times, and the faces start to feel familiar. Here are official places where parents and caregivers already gather.
Schedules change, so check each page before you go.
Library Story Times
DC Public Library hosts story times for babies, toddlers and preschoolers at neighborhood branches. For example, the library’s Baby and Toddler Story Time is a 20 to 30 minute program of books, songs, rhymes and fingerplays for children from birth to three years old. Space is limited at some branches, so check the event listing. Search the library’s event calendar for story times and toddler play programs near you. Regular story times are a good way to see the same parents every week.
Recreation Center Co-op Play
The DC Department of Parks and Recreation runs a Cooperative Play program Monday through Friday from 9 am to 12 pm for children ages 18 months to 4 years. Children are in two age groups, 18 to 29 months and 2 1/2 to 4 years. Locations include Chevy Chase, Columbia Heights, Raymond, Ridge Road, Rose Park, Turkey Thicket, Volta Park, Friendship, Guy Mason and North Michigan Park. See the full list with addresses, and email kidscampsandcoop@dc.gov with questions.
Every ward also has neighborhood recreation centers. Use the DPR recreation center list by ward to find the one closest to you, then check its page for hours and programs. See also DPR’s early childhood programs.
Strong Start Community Playgroups
The Strong Start DC Early Intervention Program hosts community playgroups at neighborhood libraries. They give families information about their child’s development, screenings, the early intervention process and community resources, in a setting where children play with peers of the same age. RSVP opens at 10 a.m. two weeks before each playgroup. The 2026 schedule includes the Cleveland Park, Deanwood, Francis A. Gregory and Mt. Pleasant libraries. See the official schedule and RSVP details.
Strong Start also offers free early intervention services for eligible DC children from birth to 3.
Parent Groups and Support
- Mary’s Center Healthy Start offers workshops and group events to connect families to services and each other. See their group programs.
- DC Healthy Start is a DC Health program that offers services, referrals and support for women, parents and infants in certain wards. To ask whether your ward is covered, call DC Health at (202) 442-5955.
Tips for Making Mom Friends
- Go to the same story time or play session every week for a month.
- Say hello to one new parent each visit. A simple “How old is yours?” works.
- Offer a playground meetup after story time.
- Bring a snack to share.
